From building pyramids in the 27th century BC to designing modern day smart cities, automatic cars, human robots, engineers have always been an “Engine of innovation and progress”. Engineers have always fascinated societies and contributed tremendously to the growth of the human race.

Therefore, engineering education has always amused and attracted the attention of young and curious minds as a career because it indirectly gives you the assurance of your successful life in the future.

It won’t be an exaggeration if we say that we are a nation of engineers because out of every 10 graduates, 3 are engineers. In our country, we produce 50 Lakhs graduates annually out of which 15 lakhs are only engineers.

Considering all the success stories of the past, most of the young student wish to sail in the same boat for greener pasture.

However, nowadays engineering as a branch is somewhere losing its shine (for various reasons as discussed here). We are at the cross road and thus situation demands a close look at the local and global scenarios before one embarks on this journey. It’s time to do some rational thinking. We must take a good look at past present and future. We must check whether it is the reality or hype in the present context.

My intention is to put forth few learning’s before students so that they take a judicious call before they put their parent’s investment and their own efforts at a stake. This blog (I hope) will act like a North Star for you. Hence, I am penning this blog with three elements… Then, Now and Next!

THEN

National Knowledge Commission (NKC) says that “Engineering education is among the key enablers of growth for transforming India’s economy”. And it is undoubtedly! Since independence engineers have significantly contributed to the vertical and horizontal growth of the Indian economy. They not only build large corporations as intrapreneurs but also build a very strong MSME segment as entrepreneurs.

Engineering education as a career has provided a tremendous advantage of growth, prosperity, and happiness to the individuals. Growth opportunities started thriving throughout industrial development.

During the start of the globalisation period especially in the 1980’s we witness huge migration opportunities in the field of electrical, mechanical, electronics, computer, and IT engineering. Thanks to ERP (Enterprise resource planning) development and Y2K. We witnessed huge migration epidemic to the developed countries like USA, UK, Australia, Canada to name a few.

Even folks who showed their solidarity to the motherland also become the beneficiaries of better jobs, good perks, ESOP’s and entrepreneurial opportunities. Therefore, this stream of education always looked like an elite opportunity and hence takers were many

NOW

However, with the advent of rapid technological growth things started to change. Disruption due to rapid growth in the field of Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Machine Learning has created new challenges which are impacting future jobs and the skill sets. Few challenges (as listed below) which were in the nascent stages earlier started to surface prominently as the time passed and their ripple effect started to haunt us.

The disparity in Engineering Education

There has been a glaring disparity between leading technological institutions such as the IIT’s, State Technological universities and other engineering colleges in the country. Other engineering colleges (except few) which had produced engineers in large numbers clearly lacked higher learning engaged in teaching, research, and innovation. Hence the quality of engineers suffered (However, system absorbed them due to great demand). They lacked industry exposure, the culture of internship and hence they lacked practical exposure.

Also, there has been a disparity between academia and industry requirements. What is been taught in academia is not so adequate as industries are working on the latest technologies and platforms. As a result, in the last couple of years, we have witnessed huge employability challenges in the computer and IT sectors.

Quality of Production

We are facing a huge challenge on the quality of engineers we are producing. Though we are producing more engineers than America the quality of 80% of engineer’s population is in question (e.g. America produces 2.3 lakh engineers for 19 trillion economy where as India produces 15 lakh engineers for 3 trillion economy) However, they are short of required skills. As a result of which industry is confirming only 20% out of them as the job ready. There will be around 80,000 fewer seats in engineering in the year 2018 in the country (ET Online, June 4, 2018). According to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), nearly 200 ‘substandard’ engineering colleges have applied for closure. Since 2016, the number of engineering seats has been on the decline. According to AICTE, it is around 75,000 annually. In 2016-17, total intake capacity at undergraduate level was 15,71,220, of which total enrollment was 7,87,127, which is just around 50.1 per cent. In 2015-16, total intake was 16,47,155, of which enrollment was 8,60,357, which was 52.2 per cent. AICTE wants to close down about 800 engineering colleges across India.

Lack of essential employment skills

In one of the surveys by AMCAT, 2016 it is observed that majority of the population lack desired domain skills (e.g. programming skills, analytical skills for software engineers), soft skills, cognitive skills like critical thinking, problem solving, analytical abilities and English comprehension and expression skills. The survey suggested that only 20% of the candidates were having the right type of employability skills. This situation is quite alarming because 80% of the population do not possess the right degree of knowledge, skills, and aptitude BUT they have an engineering degree. Therefore, JUST DEGREE alone is not providing the right employability opportunity.

It is very sad to see engineers working in the field of insurance, banking, pharma etc for survivals.

Therefore, it is important that all the aspirant must take cognizance of these facts.

WHAT IS NEXT?

We are in the industry 4.0 revolution. There will be rather more demand for engineers. BUT for the RIGHT one. Therefore, it is very important for all aspirants to understand or take cognizance of the following factors.

  1. Is engineering a right career for me? Do I have the necessary cognitive ability to pursue engineering?
  2. What kind of engineering branch am I fit for? Whether I have necessary abilities, orientation, personality, intelligence to pursue this particular engineering branch?
  3. Engineering education is all about critical thinking, problem solving, curiosity, and innovation. Am I using these skills in my day to day life?
  4. Engineering is being offered in more than 130 different branches. And we are also witnessing the emergence of a new type of engineering courses. Do I know more about them and how they will be in demand in the future?
  5. What criteria’s do I need to put forward while selecting the right engineering institute? There are new edge universities who are offering the state-of-the-art courses. Do I know enough about them?

The engineering education in India is at the crossroads today. It’s a chance to take the country on the next high growth trajectory by having the right manpower. Students need to ensure they are industry-ready by the end of their program.

In the end, I would like to request all the parents to stop pushing their children towards this field of education until and unless they really have an interest in pursuing it. They may start it physically but lack of accepting it mentally will always be the reason for their failure. There are million career options who guarantee’s the successful life, please serve them in their plate of life and let them pick their favorite.

I would like to conclude this blog with a wonderful saying, “life is the most difficult exam… most people fail because they try to copy others not realizing that everyone has a different question paper…”

Why career Guidance?

A famous quote by Einstein says, “everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”

So true, but in reality, many students and parents give their best to make fish climb tree. And the repercussions of such cases can be devastating at times.

Certain social myths and peer pressure influence or compel us to choose and give preferences to specific courses. This type of career decisions may cost dear in long term. At times its difficult for students to reverse their path and continue to drag themselves relentlessly. The result is suffering, time loss, financial burden and most importantly student face social, peer embarrassment which hamper their self-efficacy.

We must understand that each one of us has certain unique abilities, orientations, personalities, and interests. If engaged wisely career and life success can be achieved.

Career milestone such as 10th and 12th are two decisive thresholds in one’s career and life. Hence it is important that professional guidance along with scientific career assessment or aptitude tests are sought in order to make an optimal career decision.

Professional guidance or coaching are well accepted and sought-after practices in the contemporary world of personal and professional development. World’s leading sportsman, professionals, corporate executives, and entrepreneurs welcome such practices today. They regularly seek professional advice from the experts, undergo various psychometric assessments in order to understand areas for development so that they constantly work on their developmental path. Hence, it is important and critical for parents and students to seek professional approach and guidance before making a career decision.

The professional guidance can offer rich knowledge about various subject matters, broader perspective to one’s understanding.

Benefits for Career Guidance

In today’s competitive world, we all know the importance of making a right career decision. One wrong decision can lead to loss of valuable education time, loss of financial resources, efforts, social embarrassment, student’s self-confidence. Whereas a right decision can bring in lots of happiness and success.

  1. Career Aptitude tests assist students and parents to understand their core intelligence setting, interest, abilities, and orientations.
  2. It highlights the major strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, it acts as a blueprint while taking a career decision.
  3. Career guidance process also involves expert advice from the counselor, thereby evaluating various permutations and combinations for a set of career courses.
  4. Career guidance process helps students to take a long-term view on career progression.
  5. Career guidance process offers expert advice on various pre-qualification examinations, their pre-requisites, and suitable educational institutes.

Therefore, to sum up, it is important that while taking the most important decision of our life, we must explore all possible information, seek professional guidance, think ahead of time. One should avoid taking career decision only basis of marks.

“Those who can, DO. Those who can teach, CHANGE THE WORLD.”

Yesterday we all have celebrated the occasion of teacher’s day, we paid our gratitude to this noble profession and the fraternity. Teachers are the biggest change makers who can transform the individuals, and ultimately our societies, nations and the world.

However, we are living in the most challenging time of the history and hence it is time to pause, think and take a count of what is happening around us. How the world is changing and why education needs to change, how teachers need to change. Hope you will find this read helpful.

A teacher wants to prepare their students to succeed in life. However, what was considered a good education so far, is no longer adequate for success in college, career, and citizenship in the 21st-century world.

We are witnessing a huge disruption due to the industrial revolution in 4.0. Advent in the field of robotics, big data analytics, and deep learning has created a huge acceleration. The change management (an ability to cope with these changes and take advantage) is becoming more complex. Machines are becoming more intelligent and would replace anything which is repetitive and low skilled.

Disruption is not limited to only technology but it is impacting all spheres of our life. In a way creating an irreversible change the way we interact, learn, work, play, travel, worship and do business.

Simultaneously, we are witnessing an absolutely new set of business models and economies emerging. Companies like Uber, Ola, Flipkart, Alibaba, Airbnb have changed the whole definition of business.

The change in the digital world has a combinatorial effect. And therefore, it is demanding whole new skill sets and competencies for the future. Many research studies are confirming that by 2025 almost 65% of the jobs which exist today will no longer be available. And 65% of children joining a primary education in 2016 will eventually end up working in a completely new job that does not even exist today1[1]. New jobs will emerge and these new jobs will demand a very different level of skill sets.

Creating a future workforce with relevant skills is the foundation job of the education system of any country. And hence, our education system the way it is structured needs to undergo a huge transformation. We need new perspectives on teaching and learning. It is now necessary to open a new window for thinking about how 21st-century skills and standards would impact.  World Economic Forum[2] in their report advocates that the future job market would expect individuals with skills sets (21st Century Skills) like critical thinking and complex problem solving (as we expect more ambiguous and uncertain challenges and environment as we go forward in the 21st century), creativity and innovation (we have a long way to go on this front, we as a nation have remained consumer of innovation and technologies, on the global level we rank 66th among 127 countries[3]), communication, emotional intelligence, collaboration, character, as well as the establishment of lifelong learning habits such as ability to learn-how-to-learn with technology as the central roles in the new picture of teacher effectiveness.  etc.

In this new demand of education system, the way we teach and learn will no longer work or will not be effective. Regular cognitive skills can be easily replaced by technologies. Technological platforms like Khan Academy have proved that learning can happen despite the traditional schooling system. The rise in the home-schooling in America is a great case study for us to ponder upon. And we are also witnessing the noticeable movement on home-schooling in many towns and cities in our own country.

The way I look at it, teachers can play a critical role in the education transformation by upgrading their capacities. Educational institutes need to adopt a futuristic view and create an environment which facilitates this change and empowers teachers to play a new role.

We need to create a learning environment which showcases great empathy and interpersonal abilities. Adapting to student-centric, inclusive, and experiential learning environment is a need of an hour. The teacher needs to play a role of a facilitator, collaborator, coach, mentor, co-learner, co-creator. They should create an environment wherein they together can challenge statuesque, brainstorm, take risks, ask and solve difficult questions. Most importantly develop conceptual and applied knowledge.

It is undoubtedly a challenging time but at the same time it is also offering a huge growth opportunity for leadership development for teachers. Teachers must embrace this change more proactively.

I would like to end this blog by wishing the entire teaching fraternity the very best and offer an anthem (curated from Article published by Ashoka Foundation) which can continuously motivate them and keep hopeful in this exciting journey… “I am a teacher. I look at my classroom and I see the next generation of astronauts and inventors, healers and artists, mothers and fathers, thinkers and dreamers. My students will make discoveries, both big and small. They will shape the marketplace, influence culture, improve lives. And I will help them. I will help them know themselves, other people, and the world around them. I will help them become kind, collaborative, and selfless changemakers. I will help them because I am their teacher. My students will change the worldBecause I will change theirs.”

[3] Global Innovation Index 2017

Once upon a time somewhere in the deep jungle a Sparrow, Monkey, Penguin, Elephant, Fish, Seal, and Dog all tensed up… were lined up in front of the teacher. And the teacher said, “for a fair selection, everybody has to take the same exam: Please climb the tree.”

You can imagine this scenario in front of your eyes, what you see… many confused, & worried faces starting to lose their confidence except few. What this story tells us that we all are unique and we have our own ways of learning.

However, our current education system does not acknowledge that and every day we are asking them to climb a tree. Which is tough. What we experience at the end are study or learning blues.

Experiencing study blues is common with many students. Therefore, it is important to understand what causes study blues and how we could arrest them to some extent so that students are motivated to learn.

Morale support: it is very easy to categories or label children. In most of the cases, invalidation by parents and teachers is the biggest cause which affects students’ interest and self-confidence. It is quite natural for us to look at their problems through a lens (I call itTTWWADI (That’s The Way We Always Did It). That approach cannot work in every case. That might have suited you… as you are different than them. Hence, it is important for parents to put themselves into their kid’s shoes and understand what they are going through? What is not working for them? For every problem, tuition cannot be a solution (we had a student client who was going for three math tuitions – what do you think would be the outcome?… A brilliant grade in math… or more confusion?). When I interact with teachers during workshops I emphasis that teaching and learning are two different processes happening in two different people i.e. teacher and student (the teacher is teaching while the student is learning). Therefore, while teaching it is very important for the teacher to understand to whom she is teaching? Therefore, better and empathetic relationship can be a solace for children and can reduce their learning blues.

Self-studies: One of the famous quotes by Plutarch (AD 46-AD 120, famous Greek Biographer) says it all. He says, “Mind is not a vessel that needs filling, but wood that needs igniting.” These days students run from pillar to post, from one class to another. And literally, there is very little or no time for self-study. Self-study means the devotion of time and attention to gaining knowledge of an academic subject without assistance from a teacher or tutor. It is time to assimilate knowledge, synthesis, finding the real-life applications of the learned things. Homework cannot be categorized as self-study. Instead of quantity, it is the quality that matters. Therefore, the student then resorts to mugging which can be deceiving at times and can be challenging in the later years.

Lack of motivation and planning: I guess given a choice we would be doing some other activities than studies. The reasons are simple, many of us would consider studies or learning to be boring and not exciting. So, the question is… how do we make studies or learning exciting and motivating? Carol Dweck, Stanford University Professor of Psychology, advocates about growth mindset and how it can help the student change their perspective while dealing with day to day problems and challenges. Its all about success, bread, success. Efforts rather than intelligence are valued more as it produces positive outcomes. Growth mindset also tells a student, how to build a performance step by step and create reasonable but consistent improvement.

Brain Integration: it is very important for students to understand as to how the brain facilitates learning? What activities they should perform quite often so that their brain integrates and performs well for the effectiveness, concentration, focus, memory, cognition, and self-efficacy. Contemporary research in the field of neuroscience and neuron plasticity gives us solid evidences that it is very much possible that we create new circuitry in our brain which helps us to memorize well, grasp difficult things with ease and keep us agile for complex problem-solving.

So, I would consider that study or learning blues are quite natural and they can occur in one’s life. With the right approach, methods, techniques, and mindset it can be reduced significantly.

Becoming SuperMO

Whether you are a stay at home mom or a working mom, you are notoriously busy on daily basis.

You multitask and be responsible for the success and well-being of the family, managing your own health, take care of other household responsibilities, managing finances, host friends and families, the list will just go on. In case you are a working mom then you are also a part of a corporate rat race, peer pressure, office politics, managing workload, and deadline. In metro cities traveling and traveling time itself is a challenging issue. So you are preoccupied & stressed 24 x 7. Sometimes, situations are worst and overwhelming. Self-worth, self-identity is in question. However, you are expected to deliver the best.

Therefore, mothers must develop their emotional intelligence in order to be effective on all fronts. In the contemporary word, emotional intelligence is considered as success predictor. Better EQ means more success, more peace, and better health.

Why Emotional Intelligence for Moms?

Emotions are involved in everything we do: every action, decision, and judgment. Emotionally intelligent people recognize this and use their thinking to manage their emotions rather than being managed by them.

Emotional intelligence is the habitual practice of using emotional information from ourselves and other people and integrating it with our thinking. Using these to inform our decision making to help us get what we want from the immediate situation and from life in general.

Put it another way: Emotional Intelligence is using thinking about feeling (and feeling about thinking) to guide our behavior. This will lead to better management of ourselves and better relationships with others.

Emotional intelligence helps us to identify our beliefs, biases and help us to be more intentional and allow us to think before act. It helps boost motivation and keep us hopeful. The way we put ourselves in the given situation helps us to build a relationship and help improve our interpersonal relationship and build networks.

Emotional Intelligence practice benefits for mother

•       They are able to manage stress effectively. They effectively respond rather than react.

•       They are able to remain mindful in a given situation and hence maintain their relationship, wellbeing and decision making at the optimum levels

•       They are able to gain high frustration tolerance and hence manage difficult situation very effectively and make better decisions.

•       They are able to experience effectiveness in work performance, managing office politics, and better boss-peer-subordinate relationship.

In a famous quote, Einstein proclaimed, “everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”  So true, but in practice, students and parents give their best to make fish climb tree.

And hence its time to ask that BIG question to yourself… who you are? AND What are the best careers for you considering your own strengths?

In this blog, we are discussing the most important question of our life… Career Decision?  A lot can depend on how we take career decision.

In our current culture, if A student scores 98% in Math and student B scores 98% in History, more likely the student who scored 98% in Math will receive more accolades and may be considered as more intelligent than student B. Irony of life. And, hence, traditionally specific courses receive more preference than the other.

Therefore, the myth is… a child would become successful only and only if he/she receives a specific degree or course. This type of career decisions may cost dear in long term. At times its difficult for students to reverse their path and continue to drag themselves relentlessly.

Very recently one of our students put her foot down and chose her dream career in journalism after spending close to 2 years in one of the engineering course. What we appreciate is that she could voice out her discomfort and enrolled her parents in the conversation. How many student and parents could do this?

We must understand that each one of us has certain unique abilities, orientations, and interests if engaged; success can be achieved. We can find many such individuals in society who have pursued their careers as per their strengths, abilities, and interests; as a result… doing well in life, are happy and enjoying what they are doing.

10th and 12th are two important milestones in one’s careers and hence it is important that professional guidance along with scientific career assessment or aptitude tests are sought in order to make an optimal career decision.

We must understand for sure that professional guidance is sought by every successful individual whether they are from business, corporate, or sports. They regularly seek professional advice from the experts, undergo various assessments while crafting their own developmental path.

The professional guidance offers rich knowledge about ourselves, giving a broad perspective on our strengths and weaknesses, the possibilities and limitations.

Therefore, it is equally important that as much emphasis we give it to academics, tuitions, and coaching; we should also look at career decision critically.

Benefits for Career Guidance

In today’s competitive world, we all know the importance of making a right career decision. One wrong decision can lead to loss of valuable education time, loss of financial resources, efforts, social embarrassment, and most importantly student’s self-confidence. Whereas the right decision can bring in lots of joy, happiness, and success.

1. Career Aptitude Assessments assists students and parents to understand their core intelligence setting, interest, abilities, and orientations.

2. It highlights the major strengths and weaknesses and therefore it acts as a blueprint for taking a career decision.

3. Career guidance process also involves expert advice from the counselor, thereby evaluating various dimensions for a set of career courses.

4. Entire career guidance process helps students to take a long-term view of the careers progression

Post right career decision, it is also important for students to take conscious efforts to build their life skills over a period of time. 21st-century workplaces would demand individuals who are not only passionate about their careers but also high on life skills or 21st-century skills. Therefore, career journey in the 21st century will compel us to be lifelong learners.

In the famous quote by Lao Tzu, “A Journey of thousands mile begins with a single step.” How wonderful would it be, if we invest more in this FIRST STEP well?
